Emotional Regulation
Behaviour & EmotionsEmpowering young individuals to understand feelings, master frustration tolerance, manage sudden anger, and build psychological resilience.
Emotional regulation is the ability to monitor, modulate, and express emotions effectively. Children and teens with dysregulation often react to mild stressors with explosive meltdowns, shutdown, or prolonged despondency.
- Rapid mood swings transitioning from calm to furious within seconds
- Difficulty calming down after becoming upset; crying or shouting for hours
- Extreme reactions to minor disappointments or change of plans
- Physical somatic symptoms (headaches, tummy aches) linked to emotional distress
- Developing prefrontal cortex (the brain's emotional control center matures into the mid-20s)
- Heightened sensory sensitivity and nervous system reactivity
- Lack of learned emotional vocabulary to name and process internal states
- Chronic familial tension or emotional modeling from stressed caregivers
- Frequent self-directed hostility ("I hate myself", banging head, skin picking)
- Meltdowns causing severe property damage or danger to family members
- Prolonged withdrawal from family meals, friends, and hobbies
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT-C) adapted emotional regulation skills
- Zones of Regulation and biofeedback breathing practices
- Emotion-coaching frameworks for parents to co-regulate during crises
